Top 20 Best Zombie Movies & Top 5 TV Shows Recommended Watch Review List, for the Undead Apocalypse/ Zombies Fan

Even before the first zombie movie, ‘White Zombie,’ people have been obsessed with the undead; the once living, neighbors, friends, relatives, now reanimated and attempting to eat you alive. This concept may be overused in today’s culture, but it was once terrifying.

Creating a modern best of list is difficult, as “best,” to some, may mean scariest, but to others, it may mean cinematic, drama or even humorous. And to others still, it may mean general, quality movie standards of creative story telling and developed, transformative characters. This list will include all of the above and is a recommended watch list for anyone willing to see people eating other people.

TV, Top5  (– wait, are there more than 5?)

TWD2The Walking Dead‘ always deserves a mention in anything zombie, I mean, walkers, sorry Robert Kirkman. The first episode is still one of the best, created by Hollywood cinematographer, David Tatersall, and set the tone for the entire series. I wish AMC never fired him; the end of season 1 and the entirety of season could have been good. It got better, of course, and some of those episodes in season 5 and 6 were truly amazing. I personally feel, mid-Negan, the show has gone down hill and lost its appeal to many; (hoping it gets better). I spoke with Robert Kirkman, mid-season 6; he explained that ‘The Walking Dead’ is still in its first act of storytelling. Not sure how that will play out with Andrew Lincoln, ‘Rick,’ leaving the show. AMC will hang on to this show as long as possible, so maybe the overall plan is to realize the big picture story with additional spin-off series like the underwhelming ‘Fear The Walking Dead;’ just make a show about the beginning of the apocalypse, not ‘West Coast Walking Dead,’ it’s not CSI. I did, however, enjoy the brief ‘Flight 462,’ for the mere fact that you cannot escape walkers on a plane.

‘Z Nation’ is just not worth mentioning, aw crap, I mean besides now. Zombie baby, #noop.

izombie-4-sezon-ne-zaman-baslayacakCW’s ‘iZombie‘ is a happy-go-lucky tv series that is all fun and will get you to anticipate each entree Liv Moore creates in every episode. The moral of the series is don’t chase drugs with energy drinks. Or maybe it’s the living and the undead should never date?  Anyway, it’s nothing like the comic.

santa-clarita-diet-season-3-netflix-scheduleSanta Clarita Diet‘ is hysterical all the way through. (if you’re reading this from a time capsule, there are only 2 seasons so far, so I can’t speak for future seasons). What happens when a realtor, or real-a-tor, from the ‘burbs starts to crave human flesh? Does she eat her misogynistic neighbor?

Let’s get the comedy out of the way first..

220px-Life_After_Beth_poster   ‘Life After Beth.’ Aubry Plaza makes this film fun to watch. Unexplained zombie outbreak in suburbia.

Fido  Fido is like ‘Leave It To Beaver’ 50s style television, but with zombies, you’ll love it!

zombieland  Zombieland is a how-to guide to surviving the zombie apocalypse, with great rules to live by. Not only is it entertaining, but it’s a good film as well. I truly loved this movie.

shaun-dead.0.0  ‘Shaun of the Dead‘ is a masterful modern classic, with comedy only Edgar Wright can deliver, and overall, it’s a really good movie. Pulling the blind down to ignore the zombies was a classic scene. Also, setting the stage in the beginning, with people zoning out on the bus before the outbreak is genius. Watch and re-watch.

Drama, action, suspense & horror:

warmbodies   ‘Warm Bodies.’ If you can handle a “zo-mance,” where zombies fall in love and retain human-like qualities, with a happy ending, then this may be for you.

200px-Dodsno    ‘Dead Snow‘ (Norwegian, subtitles). Nazi zombies unearthed in Norway cause havoc. Gory action, with humor.

resident-evil-the-final-chapter-2560x1440-resident-evil-the-final-chapter-6270  ‘Resident Evil.’ The first one was clearly the best in the Milla Jovovich series, but every one is entertaining & promises the Umbrella Corporation, so cool in that regard. Yes, the game is better, but the movies will be rebooted soon and promise more Umbrella Corp, so I’ll be watching.

Rezort-Poster-27x39-copy2-Copy  ‘The Rezort.’  (I still believe ‘Last Rezort’ would have been a better title). A solid movie, with a concise a story, but rather generic. After the zombie outbreak, zombies were defeated, but not eradicated, just put on an island to shoot for recreation. It’s like Jurassic Park, but with zombies, what could go wrong?

HereAlone  ‘Here Alone.’ An indie zombie film. A woman accustomed to isolation in the woods, has her routine upended when she encounters a father and daughter. I liked how you heard the zombies throughout the film, knowing their presence was nearby, but only saw the creatures at the end.

World-war-z-poster03  ‘World War Z.’ Once bitten, you have 11 seconds before you turn. You can’t outrun the turned. If you do manage to escape into a large building, they’ll just pile themselves up a hundred feet high until they breach the building. I’m not spoiling anything am I? I feel like the plot was a little muddled, and it felt like the ending didn’t fit the rest of the film, but it did have some great scenes.

Cargo-Movie-poster  ‘Cargo‘ was a nice film about a man protecting his family. I feel like they traveled in circles the entire film. I enjoyed it, with great performances, but they didn’t follow their own zombie rules at the end.

‘I Am Legend.’ Nope, they were vampires. Yes, it was an apocalyptic movie, like ‘Stakeland,’ but, again, vampires, not zombies. The book had both ravenous zombie-like, flesh-eating vampires, as well as, civilized, societal vampires.

Maggie-review   ‘Maggie.’ Clearly the best acting performance of Arnold Schwarzenegger’s career. His daughter has been bitten and slowly turns. He comforts and connects with her and gradually lets go of his child, knowing there is nothing he can do to stop the change.

TheHorde_movieposterThe Horde‘ (Belgian, subtitles). A good film, despite its flaws. A zombie outbreak occurs during a police raid on a notorious criminal gang; they must team up in order to survive.

28weekslaterPSTER066-film-28-weeks-later-2-1000x1000  ‘28 Weeks Later.’ A good sequel to a great film.

Rammbock_movieposter  ‘Rammbock‘ (German, subtitles). The true spirit of a zombie horror flick; it’s suspenseful, scary and has cinematography that enhances the scenes.

thebattery  ‘The Battery.’ A true low-budget indie film, and one of the best on this list. It tells a story, a good story, of two former minor league baseball players, hence the bats, dealing with the end of civilization, loneliness and the need to connect with other human beings, in an apocalyptic landscape.

Ravenous_220px-Les_Affamés_film_poster  ‘Ravenous‘ (2017, there are many movie titles by this name). (French, subtitles). Really good! This movie brings suspense back to zombie films, a must-watch.

REC  Scariest, for me, on this list would go to ‘[REC]‘ (Spanish, subtitles). Other titles on this list have scary moments and overall creepiness, but this found footage horror movie is edge-of-your-seat thrilling. The American remake, ‘Quarantine,’ and both of [REC]’s sequels were not very good.

‘Dawn of the Dead.’ George Romero’s 1968 ‘Night of the Living Dead’ created the zombie film genre, and his 1978 ‘Dawn of the Dead’ perfected it. This original recipe, classic horror film sets the stage for everything zombie to follow.  The 2004 Zack Snyder ‘Dawn of the Dead’ reboot is a non-stop action film, quite different from the original; a must-watch for any zombie fan.

28-days-later-2002-poster  ‘28 Days Later.’ Danny Boyle completely changed the zombie rules, which revitalized the genre with this suspenseful film. ’28 Days’ is the first movie to depict zombies as mad, crazed-sprinters; run for your life! These zombies created so much more tension as a result. Also just one drop of infected blood can turn someone in an instant.  However, I felt the last portion of this movie was little uninteresting, compared to its thrilling beginning.

train-to-busan-commentary  ‘Train to Busan‘ is my favorite on this list. It’s a Chinese, action-thriller that is suspenseful from beginning to end. It’s everything a zombie film should be. Just watch it.

If I missed a zombie movie title that you loved, by all means, scream at me in the comments. I mean, you may get blocked, but I would love to hear your opinion, not really, but I would like to know if there is a good film that I missed or haven’t seen.

Must-See Sci-Fi Movies for 2014

Here is a list of the Best Movies of 2014 or Best Sci-Fi Movies of 2014 I should say:

Instead if reflecting on the past, on what happened in 2013, let’s take a look forward into the future, into the sci-fi future of 2014. more specifically, a look into what the future holds for us in theatrical amazement in 2014.

Jupiter Ascending

the Wachowski brothers.

Edge of Tomorrow

Tom Cruise, Emily Blunt & time travel. set in the future, during an epic battle with an alien race, Tom Cruise experiences a time glitch and repeats the day of the battle. can he find clues on that single day to change the course of history, where aliens defeat the human race? and there’s also cool action sequences.

Xmen : Days of Future Past

Do I really need to convince anyone to go see this in the theatre?  The biggest dilemma is midnight show or opening night.  Bryan Singer (‘Xmen’ (2000), ‘X2’ (2003)) returns with the original cast, including Halle Barry and combines with the cast from ‘Xmen : First Class,’ Jennifer Lawrence & James McAvoy, to create a stellar cast, including, of course, Patrick Stewart, Ian McKellen & Hugh Jackamn. An amazing superhero director, an amazing cast & a great script. See it, or I’ll use Cerebro to find you.

Guardians of the Galaxy

I  am so looking forward to this! I have been excited ever since Marvel first announced it. check out my Pinterest page for cool photos.  Chris Pratt plays StarLord / Peter Quill, Vin Diesel plays the voice of Groot, Bradley Cooper, the voice of Rocket Racoon, Zoe Saldana plays Gamora, Dave Batista plays Drax the Destroyer, Glen Close & Karen Gillian also star. also star. did you see the very end of Thor2? if you did, then you know that Benevio Del Toro plays ‘the Collector.’ the collector of what? well, everything worth collecting, but important to this story is the ‘infinity stones.’ and if you’ve been paying attention to the Marvel cinematic universe you would know, that from that epic moment in the ‘Avengers,’ where you see Thanos’ Infinty Gauntlet. If you missed it, go watch it again. I’m sure they will explain Soul Gems, the Cosmic Cube, the Infinity Stones and Thanos in greater detail in the movie. This will be an epic event, I may live cast the midnight showing. Who wants to go in cosplay?

Captain America : The Winter Soldier

Yes, Bucky returns and “Cap,” kicks butt. Did I just spoil it for you? Go see it, you’ll enjoy it, and don’t forget to watch it all the way through to the very, very for glimpses of what is to come in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Christopher Nolan. do I really need to say anything else here?

Rebecca Hall, Johnny Depp & AI. Can an ai become human when merged with an actual human consciousness? Or will the ai take over & seize control of the nefarious, secret government agenda?

9_thisone_Hobbit 3 Movie

The Hobbit, part 3 :There & Back Again

There’s only an epic battle left in the original story, about 1/2hour, so that’s 2 1/2 hours of newly created material to connect the dots & set the stage for the Lord of the Rings. I enjoyed part 2 & was very happy there was more dragon than in the book. It’s interesting to see the rise of Sauron; I would like to see more of that in part 3. Yes, the movies are plagued with orc / goblin ambiguity and cross-overs from the book, but there’s wizards and dragons and second breakfasts.

Kind of like the ever familiar theme (‘Terminator,’ ‘iRobot,’ etc) of humans creating robots to make their lives easier, then an AI begins to think for oneself & eventually robots try to take over the world and/or exterminate all human life. This is sort of a similar theme of upcoming Marvel movies :  Xmen : Days of Future Past, with Sentinel  or Avengers 2: Age of Ultron, (doesn’t Ultron kill everyone & only time travel can save them, kind of like ‘Xmen: Days of Future Past’ plot; oops, spoiler alert.  Also like ‘Transformers4: Age of Extinction’ apparently.

This is a Steven Spielberg movie, which, under normal circumstances would be a good thing, but in recent history, Spielberg hasn’t been successful in the sci-fi genre. Not including ‘Super 8’ or ‘Cowboys & Aliens,’ as he only produced, or ‘produced’ maybe I should say–stay at home while others do the work. Do you remember ‘A.I. : Artificial Intelligence?’ (they had to spell it out so stupid people would know what A.I. was). That movie was so boring, AND it was 3 hours long @#$%! If you haven’t seen it, stop watching at minute 3:17 (guessing at time) but after she says “conundrum,” then skip to the final scene; you’ll get what it was about and see the twist. now i can rant all day, every day about ‘War of the Worlds,’ and maybe I will, but not here. Attention Steven Spielberg: “You can’t have an epic sci-fi film if the aliens are the dumbest ever depicted in any sci-fi movie ever seen or any book ever written. So to conclude, we have an over-used theme & a film maker who has lost his touch with sci-fi; what’s the catch phrase for this post? that’s right, “don’t make it suck.”

Last Days on Mars

I’m guessing its like ‘The Thing,’ but on mars.

Mocking Jay, part 1

Yep, the third in the ‘Hunger Games’ series will be in 2 parts.  More Jennifer Lawrence & the crazy costumes of Stanley Tucci. Sad there wonit be any more from fashion designer Lenny Kravitz. May the reviews be ever in your favor.

Mad Max : Fury Road

I loved Mel Gibson when he was Mad Max, the pre-crazy years. Everyone loves a post-apocalyptic world with deadly boomerangs and bad-ass cars. Yes, I am referring to the Australian 1972 Ford Falcon from the original Mad Max film. I got to see a fan’s restored version of the original at Comic Con this year.

Will you see this in the theatre? You have 20 seconds to comply. Can they they make this cool, and not ’80’s cheeseball with Ford Taurus police cruisers? The original threequels made Robocop to be almost like Ironman, yes, he flew in Robocop 3. There wasn’t a whole lot of depth in the series, and they just masked the poor plot with grotesque violence. I wonder if Peter Weller, now Syracuse University professor of history, will make a cameo? I want to see an intelligent plot for Detroit’s robotic finest. Make it cool, and you’ll have a rekindled cult classic.

Seventh Son

Based on the novel, ‘The Spook’s Apprentice.’ Lots of fantasy action and crazy visual effects, so much so that it will be released in IMAX.

I know what your thinking, it’s Godzilla & you just gotta watch it. Maybe King Idra or Mothra will be in it instead of just another reboot. I also think it’s too soon to have a giant creature, Kanji, in the pacific after this year’s release of ‘Pacific Rim. ‘

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles

There’s a lot of people excited about the release of this film. I spoke with some of the creators earlier this year and it sounds really cool; not campy at all like the previous films; hopefully that’s not just hype. And yes I know the owner of the Cowabunga Van.

Dracula Untold

The origin story of Vlad the Impaler (Vlad Tepes, Prince of Wallachia) becoming Dracula, set in the 1400’s. More along the lines of ‘Bram Stoker’s Dracula’ (Francis Ford Coppola, 1992) and not at all like ‘Twilight.’ I’m curious if the film ‘Byzantium’ inspired this vampire movie. Many people don’t know the real origin story of Dracula, the one that when Bram Stoker came across it, in 1890, & combined with other folk tales, created earth’s first vampire. epic.

Transformers 4 : Age of Extinction

Is that extinction of Decepticons,  humanity? Michael Bay? or the movie series? Or maybe the Decepticons are just teaming up with the Jurassic Park peeps for Dino-Robot Global Domination. If giant robots can’t take over the earth the 3 movies, better implore the help of dinosaurs, right? Oh rootin’-tootin’, Jurassic World’ (Jurassic Park4) comes out in 2015- $&@?!, that was such a great rant-I’m leaving it anyway, but it won’t make sense now. Ok Michael Bay, do your action thing & no plots that make no sense, like Transformers 2 & leave the kiddy stuff out it, like giant robots stepping on mom’s flower garden, in Trans1. Oh yes, a request from a fan– yes, I have fans, ok, just one, and she wants more girl robots. I guess there was one in Trans2, (she turned into 3 motorcycles, does that mean she was 3 Gobots, I mean, Autobots? or just one?) but was killed in her second action sequence. The third film in the series was the best so far, in my opinion. Trans4 will have epic action, even beyond what we have seen before & claims to be the best yet in the series; we shall see. I keep expecting my car to transform into a robot, but Autobots just don’t come in Kia. If there was a Prius Transformer, would they need less energon to survive? Be green giant robots, be green.

for possible consideration:

Legend of Hercules

(no Kevin Sorbo, a plus, but the plot has little to do with history or the Greek myth, a big MINUS. Hopefully it wont be horrible like ‘The Immortals.’ Just make it better than “Clash of the Titans,’ and it’ll be cool. By the way guys, a good date movie is totally buff guys with no shirts (unless it’s Matthew McConaughey of course).

Pretty sure the volcano kills a bunch of rich people at the end.

Jon Snow stars in a movie! “Winter is coming,” or ash and pyroplastic flow (hot mud entombing your body for generations to come. (Things NOT to do when impending volcanic doom is upon you: be on the toilet).

300: Rise of an Empire

(‘300: 2’  or  maybe just  ‘301’)

Pretty sure they all died at the end of the first one. oh ya, you’re right, Faramir left early to sing a ballad about it. Yes, ‘300’ was based on a novel that changed the most heroic battle in ancient history, the Battle of Thermypolae, into something more fanciful. The true history of that battle, when Leonidas and the rest of the 300 Spartans and 1000 Thebans, used and broke all of their weapons in the fiercest fighting that region had ever seen, they fought armed soldiers with rocks. When they ran out of rocks, they fought spears and swords with fists. Leonidas’ last stand slowed the invading Persians enough for the Athenians & other Greek city states to gather their armies and triremes (ancient rowing ships with battering rams, like the ancient version of a torpedo) and decimate the Persian navy, thwarting their invasion. Such courage and defiance was lost a little on me in the movie ‘300.’ I expect the same style from the first film, action and yelling, with over-saturated coloring, and buff guys with no shirts. If guys can go see the expendables for pure testosterone action, why not let the girls see  this one?

Dawn of the Planet of the Apes

Yep, another planet of the apes movie

Are they changing the origin story yet again?

You can’t reboot the series with every movie. no, no, no.

Gary Oldman will be in it, so by default, it wont be horrible.  The script is supposed to be really good, so maybe put it on the cool list. I’m hesitant to go ape sh*t on this one, but could be interesting.

Resident Evil 6

You only need to know 3 things:

1. the T-Virus turns every living creature into crazed mutated killer zombies.

2. the Umbrella Corporation is awesome.

3. Milla Jovovich will always be hot.

oh, and yes, see it.

you don’t have to have seen the previous 5 movies to understand that the T-Virus turns you into zombies, the Umbrella Corp is cool & Milla Jovovich is hot.  do I need to go over the 3 steps again?

I, Frankenstein

I suppose I have to at least mention this one. this falls into the ‘odd twist’ category, for me, including movies ‘Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter’ and ‘Nazi’s on the Moon,’ ridiculous, but lots of action to makes it watchable. Do we really need a Frankenstein with the powers of Wolverine? Sorry Aaron Ekhart, I’m Netflixing this one. Unless there’s nothing to do on the Jan 24th release date, then I’m there. We should all go & cosplay as Herman Munster.

And no, I’m not including the Bible movies in this list. The Charleston Heston era films are shinning examples of classic Hollywood. I just don’t see how CGI can compare. I could be wrong, but ‘Exodus,’ and ‘Noah’ are on the maybe list, not the must-see list for 2014.

for teens:

Looking forward to this. I know what you’re thinking; don’t worry, it wont be another Twilight. It has greater depth and more character development, with a far more interesting plot. Assuming they treat it well on the silver screen — uh hum, Mortal Instruments.

Welcome to Yesterday

Teens build a time machine. Wouldn’t you just love to go back in time to ace that chem exam or say the right thing to get the girl? Well, yes, but I’d rather use time travel for more important matters, like to save the human race ( Edge of Tomorrow) or save my entire home world from annihilation (Gallifrey, Dr Who).

Amazing Spider-Man 2

This one better be amazing, as the title says; The first ‘Amazing Spider-Man,’ not so much.

It was just too soon for a reboot & the plot got twisted because Sony Pictures demanded it be a certain way, so much so, that they fired director Sam Raimi, dropped the part where Peter Parker’s father experimented on him, thus making it possible and more plausible, that Parker could shoot webs out of his wrists, not ever needing web cartridges, & then they pieced the script together & were forced to reboot the project. Attention superhero companies, I’m talking to you DC ( uh-hum — Superman) and now Marvel (I know I’ll have to repeat myself for the upcoming Fantastic Four reboot – grrr) & everybody else, wait 10 years at least to reboot. The ’90’s ‘the Phantom,’ with Billy Zane, for example could use a reboot & retelling of the story, although that is one of my favorite superhero movies; there were no sequels because, plot-wise, everything was in the first movie. The cheesy,  ‘free running / parkour’ version of ‘the Phantom’ tv mini series does not count.

so back to Spider-Man. .

Did they use up all the cool villains? Or maybe not since they rebooted the series. We will see ‘Carnage’ in the 3rd Amazing Spider-Man, so ‘Venom,’ the coolest of the Spider-man villains, lives, in a way. In AmazaSpidey2, we will see Electro (Jamie Fox) & Gwen Stacey (Emma Stone, not Bryce Dallas Howard, as in the Tobey MaGuire’s Spider-man 3); and no MJ. Gwen Stacey dies in the comic series. Spidey tries to save her as she falls from a building, but he jerks his webs back too fast, with a jerk and she breaks her neck because of it. He then learns  how momentum works (√=m•v); he’s always studying physics and engineering, you’d think  he’d know about it ahead of time. Anyway, the first Amazo-Spider-Man was more for teens than adults (with a shallow & uncomplicated plot) & definitely didn’t warrant seeing it in the theatre, even with cool action director, Vic Armstrong. Hoping they have a better developed, better written script this time. I love Spidey, & I’ll see it of course, but make me WANT to see it Sony Pictures.

Vampire Academy

A fun boarding school vampire movie.

family movies:

Earth to Echo

I believe they are trying for part ‘E.T.,’ part ‘WALL-E’ with this one. It could be interesting, just not on the epic list for 2014.

It is Disney, & I’m really hoping they don’t cram it full of ‘family programming’ like ‘Once upon a time’ (or ‘Once I used to like Fairy Tales,’ as I have come to call it.) or ‘Oz, the Great & Powerful,’ ( how can you possibly screw up Wizard of Oz? This movie. There is so much more to the story that L. Frank Baum created in 1900, what about the Mole King? the SyFy channel’s ‘Tin Man,’ with Zooey Deschanel was so much better). So, back to ‘Maleficent,’ the story behind the evil queen from “Sleeping Beauty.’ it has potential to be cool like ‘Red Riding Hood’ & ‘Snow White & the Huntsman.’ Just go back to the origins of ‘Sleeping Beauty,’ incorporate elements from the tales the Brothers Grimm wrote down in 1812; they are quite dark & gruesome, but intriguing. Don’t make it suck Disney.

This is just a list of movies I’m excited about for the coming year & I apologize if I missed one (if I did, mention it in the comments). I haven’t seen any of them, so I can’t say, with absolute certainty, that they are all indeed awesome, but these are the films that are on my radar, the ones that I will see. I hope they are all awesome and can quell our insatiable sci-fi hunger for another year.
