The Cloverfield Paradox is a paradox unto itself. scifi netflix movie

‘The Cloverfield Paradox’ is an extremely well done scifi adventure movie, with amazing VFX / CGI and special FX. BUT the plot and the story could have been so SO much better; it just felt like they added unnecessary scenes to cover up the gaps in the story and major plot holes. The worst part of this movie was the plot trying to connect the previous films in this series, ‘Cloverfield’ and ’10 Cloverfield Lane.’

Cloverfield-ParadoxSPOILERS below:

‘The Cloverfield Paradox’ movie, surprised us all by dropping it on Netflix, immediately available after the Super Bowl, on the online streaming platform, skipping theatrical release. In ‘The Cloverfield Paradox,’ the time frame is set in the future to our present 2018 (mentioning this just in case someone from the future is reading this and archiving it to unravel the on-going Cloverfield Mystery). With only 5 years remaining of Earth’s oil reserve supply, a last minute, last ditch effort to save modern civilization, a particle accelerator on a massive space station is created, with the name ‘Cloverfield.’ If it really was humanity’s last chance, why did the ship have to be so big? It literally would have taken decades to build, which would present so many technological problems, including the original parts and design would have to be replaced after 10 years. The particle accelerator itself was not that big, which would be the only reason to have such a massive ship, as current particle accelerators are miles in length, (and circular). The ship design looked amazing, but the rotating elements were off-axis, which would not create the intended artificial gravity; also not necessary and adding to the size of the ship.

Cloverfield_ship.png

Perhaps “The Cloverfield Paradox” is that the use of alternative fuels would have negated the need for fossil fuels and deescalated any future “Oil Wars,” thus negating the need for this entire movie. Today, the military has prototype biofuel fighter jets that perform equally to fossil fuel jets. A biofuel commercial airline jet made its first transatlantic flight several years ago. Solar City solar panels, using Tesla batteries, powered an entire hospital last fall, as independent aid to Puerto Rico. Solar power plants already exist in the Nevada and Arizona deserts, not to mention countless wind farms around the world. I find it hard to believe, “humanity’s last hope” lies in an untested technological form of space particle accelerator energy generator, that feeds energy to the entire planet. And what was the plan to get the energy down to Earth? Beam it down like a satellite mobile phone signal? If so, would you have to wait for it to pass overhead to get power for your house or city? So many questions..

Solar_Power_Plant_Gemasolar

Back to the story.. and this is the worst part of this film, Donal Logue, an author, via tv broadcast, to the Cloverfield space ship bridge command center, explains the tie-ins to all the Cloverfield movies: “the particle accelerator could open a door to another dimension and bring demons or monsters to Earth.” WHAT?! Why would you take ALL the anticipation and suspense away from the entire film? Also, why were you watching television 30 seconds before testing the device, with only fuel for three more test attempts), THE most important thing in human history? Was it for your Instagram Story?

DonalLogue_CloverfieldParadox

Well, now you know what’s going to happen and what will happen on Earth right after the accelerator fires up. Now it’s just wait and see as story unfolds, but wait, we’ll mislead you with scenes that distract from the main story like the arm scene didn’t need to be there. Unless Hamilton was going to use the arm to kill Mena at the climax of their fight scene; they even showed a close-up of the arm, eluding to it being used later in the fight scene, but it never was. Or, unless they were trying to say that that area in the ship was where the dimensions overlapped, but if so, there should have been more anomalies in that same area, like every anomaly, including the unexplained lake of water that appeared out of no where. If they were trying to say that “condensation” created the lake, then the weight of the mystery water would have thrown the station off balance long before the explosion of the magnetic/oxygen related  incident at the rotating gravity balancer. This magnetic anomaly would have made perfect sense if it was in the same location. The purpose of the oxygen scene was to get more energy to launch the particle accelerator, and was going to give them “just enough” energy to do that, but instead it just dropped the periscope thingy with blue lights, that, for some reason, needed to drop down to start the particle accelerator, instead of just being down all the time, it’s not like they needed the space, again, the ship was huge. And also somehow, the ship had tons of energy for the rest of the movie. They could have just had “weird stuff happens on the ship” and still have had it been cohesive in some way.

Cloverfield_Paradox_arm

People freaked out on Twitter over the ending, but you knew there were going to be giant creatures beginning with Donal Logue’s tv broadcast scene. Also, when husband looks out the window and sees explosions and hears fighter jets flying to the scene (yes, this could be the start of the “Oil Wars” mentioned previously, but not after Donal Logue). And again, when you see the shadow of the monster in the smoke over the debris. And again Again, in the bomb shelter (where was this? who built it? and how did a random doctor know its location? Was it on Yelp? Hey Siri, is there an abandoned bomb shelter and or bunker near me left unlocked with plenty of supplies that also has great cell reception?), when you heard giant foot steps above; what else could have made those exact sounds? And finally, when husband actually says, “You’re having her come back here [to Earth] to these THINGS,” right before you see the giant creature at the end.

Sheppard_Gyro_compass_motion

Through the use of the Sheppard Gyro Compass device, The Cloverfield space station, intending on creating unlimited energy, accidentally sends the crew to an alternate dimension. The scifi aspects hold up, sort of, when weird things happen and continue to happen without explanation, in a similar vein to ‘Event Horizon.’ I believe ‘Cloverfield Paradox’ was trying to say that when the original Cloverfield ship of original Earth jumped to a new dimension, the universe was trying to correct itself, with anomalies, because the ship did not belong to this new dimension. This wasn’t explained very well, in fact nothing was explained very well. So much so, that instead of establishing rules for the Cloverfield Universe, that were desperately needed (& were promised in promotional marketing), this movie basically says, “we did some stuff and now we can do whatever we want for future films, because none of it matters.” If you want people to become fans, set up rules so we have something to grasp to. As far as I can tell, the particle accelerator opened a dimensional gateway and let out giant monsters in every dimension, at different times. I can only assume that now, ‘Cloverfield’ and ’10 Cloverfield Lane’ took place in alternate dimensions and all future movies will have no tie-ins to previous films, and if they do, and a future sequel is not popular, they can simply hit command Z and undo the previous plot, citing that happened in another dimension, and has no relevance on a continuous plot line. ‘The Cloverfield Paradox’ was originally called, ‘God Particle,’ after the Higgs-Boson particle discovered at the Cern particle accelerator. Scientists have claimed the Higgs-Boson can explain the universe. Maybe they, Paramount with JJ Abrams, originally named it “God Particle,” so they could play God with the plot and never be accountable for anything that doesn’t work.

Speaking of giant monsters.. In the original ‘Cloverfiled,’ many of the monsters were just larger than human size, 8-10 feet tall(?) With the giant, “end boss” monster, half the size of New York buildings, that somehow Michael Jordon-jumped up and knocked off the head of the Statue of Liberty. Why? Because it made a great movie poster. The monsters, at the end of ’10 Cloverfield Lane’ were similar to the ones in ‘Cloverfield,’ but more like aliens, with chemical weapons and the technology to build a mothership capable of invading other planets. OR, maybe the aliens driving the mother ship were creatures we haven’t seen yet, who traveled through the dimensional gateway and unleashed the creatures on Earth in every timeline (I’ll take a story credit for the next Cloverfield movie Paramount). When you finally see the giant Cloverfield monster, at the end of ‘Cloverfield Paradox,’ it is so huge, it’s head is above the cloud layer. That is way bigger than Godzilla, in fact, according to science, the cloud layer, as depicted in that scene, ranges anywhere from 6000 to 20,000 feet, and the clouds depicted in that scene, cirrus above cumulus, form at a minimum of 20,000 feet and usually much higher. The weight of such a creature would have easily crushed the underground bunker from the previous scene.

Cloverfield_1stmovie_giant_creature

And in that same scene, did the giant Cloverfield monster eat the escape capsule, from Cloverfield space station, thus negating the entire struggle of every character, of the entire plot, of the entire movie? Maybe not, it was hard to tell, and maybe the creature missed the capsule and it was the same capsule that landed in that unexplained scene from the original ‘Cloverfield’ film, or maybe these two events happened in two different dimensions, and these scenes were just edited together, like Westworld timelines (which is another JJ Abrams project)? If the intention of this Paradox, a convoluted and unsupported plot line which was created merely to rub people the wrong way and get them to complain about this film online, generating enormous social media buzz, then, success.

This movie had a lot of potential. I love the actors, the acting, the incredible sets, the amazing cinematography, the flawless FX, but the story just had so many issues. I would have loved to have seen events in the future create events in the past, or something similar; just better scifi than the muddled story we were given.

Would I recommend ‘The Cloverfield Paradox’ and should you watch it? It’s better than many other movies currently on Netflix, and is even better than many films released in the theaters, despite everything I’ve just mentioned. Also, ‘The Cloverfield Paradox’ is better than anything currently on network television, so yes, I would recommend it, and yes, you should watch it (if you love scifi and don’t mind many, many unanswered questions, and major plot holes).

hulu#Bestof2017 What to watch on Hulu, end of 2017 year review:

Wouldn’t it be great if there was a streaming service not as cool as Netflix, with less selection and lesser quality original content, that requires a monthly fee for online access, AND has commercials? That’d be awesome, right?

Now there’s Hulu;

it’s everything you don’t want.

Who is #DanielWest ? #TheFlash season3 villain REVEALED!! #BlackFlash #BlackRacer

DannyWest1

The Flash season 3 villain has been revealed, Danny West (from DC Comics). With the ending season 2 of The Flash, DC Comics superhero television show on the CW,  we saw two very important things setting the stage for season3, the mention of Earth3, and Flashpoint (also Black Flash, but we’ll get to that later). Earth 3 deserves a mention, as it is the Earth where the good guys are bad, the Justice League is now the Crime Syndicate, with The Flash as Johnny Quick. In The Flash season3 finale, we learn the true identity of The Man in the Iron Mask is actually a new speedster, the real Jay Garrick, who is from Earth3. No doubt we will see more of Earth 3 in season 3 of The Flash. The last few minutes of The Flash season2 finale, we see Barry Allen, using the Speed Force, to go back in time and save his mother from being killed by Reverse Flash, Eobard Thawne, who then wore the face of Harrison Wells and set in motion the plot for the first two seasons. In the DC comics realm, when Barry Allen goes back in time to save his mother, Barry inadvertantly reconfigures the events and characters of the entire world, to where Batman is now Thomas Wayne (Bruce & Martha were killed in that alley by Joe Chill, instead of Thomas & Martha Wayne), Wonder Woman and The Amazons have invaded Europe and Aquaman and The Atlanteans have waged war on humanity and begin an invasion of Europe (It was Reverse Flash’s (Professor Zoom in the comics) plan all along. (warning, spoiler alert if you haven’t read the comics. ‘Flashpoint’ is one of the top 10 DC comics series of all time, so read it, if you haven’t already). We, of course, wont see all that in The Flash season 3, but we will see Barry, The Flash, navigating an alternate timeline of events and characters, struggling to reset the timeline, even if it means allowing his mother and father to be killed. We saw some of that conflict in season 1, where Barry resolves not to reset the past, but I guess The Flash writers just borrowed from Arrow character’s flip-flop motivations.

reverse-flash-137448

As we see, in the set photo above, by Canadagraphs, The Flash villain costume looks just like Daniel West. Who is Danny West? During an accident with The SpeedForce monorail, Iris West’s brother, and/or cousin, gains speedster powers. Daniel West adds fragments of the Speed Force Monorail to his costume, acting as armor and giving him additional powers. Daniel West, as Iris’ brother version, is responsible for paralyzing their father. This alienates Iris, which Daniel laments, as he attempts to go back in time to kill their father, in hopes (weird) to win the heart of his sister(no, not Jaime-Cersi weird, just sibling caring). Later, in DC comics fashion, Daniel West is rebooted, via the New 52, as just another story arc for Wally West.

In true CW storyline style, The Flash season 3 will change the comics enough to keep the viewers guessing, like rebooting the Central City timeline with Eddie still alive, Iris putting Barry back in the friend zone and combining Black Flash and Black Racer (see below) in varied ways. Consider the above for The Flash season3 plot spoilers, as well as adding Earth3 “heroes,” actually villains (does that include the true Jay Garrick from Earth 3? probably) into the mix, and don’t forget Jesse Quick, Harrison Wells’ daughter, now equipped with Speed Force powers, and you have an exciting nest season of The Flash. If you are not caught up on season 1 & 2 of The Flash, Netflix made a recent deal with The CW for exclusive viewing of CW television shows, where geek meets television.

black-flash-logo

Season 3 of The Flash will also introduce villain/character with a similar costumed superhero suit, The Black Flash. The Black Flash appears when a speedster is about to die and reclaims their Speed Force. We saw a glimpse of Black Flash, when Hunter Zoloman Zoom was attacked by the Time Wraiths (those ghosts, like Harry Potter Dementors, that reclaim individuals who abuse the time travel using the Speed Force. Yes, Barry Allen did that, but it was just really convenient, plot-wise, for the Time Wraiths to only attack Zoom). As the Time Wraiths attack and grab Zoom, his costume and face change. Many viewers thought it was just a disintegration of human flesh as a consequence from being touched by the Time Wraiths, but really it is the appearance of Black Flash reclaiming the Speed Force as Hunter Zoloman dies. Yes, we will see more of Black Flash in season 3 of The Flash.

black-flash-dc-comics

The Black Flash is an amalgam of Black Racer and The Flash. After Jack Kirby left Marvel, due to a superhero character rights dispute with Stan Lee, he went to DC Comics and went on to create many prime characters in the DC Universe. One of these character was Black Racer, a paraplegic Vietnam vet, named Willie Walker (odd choice of names don’t you think?), who became merged with Death itself, equipped with cosmic skis and ski poles; yes Black Racer is very similar to the Silver Surfer, whom Jack Kirby also created. Modern depictions of Black Racer have him wearing cooler cosmic boots & staves, instead of skis and ski poles. Also to note that Darkseid was the first to merge Black Racer with a corporal form. The Black Racer has had many hosts, including Mr Miracle. Much later, The Anti-Monitor merged Black Racer with Barry Allen / The Flash as a successful attempt to kill Darkseid. Black Flash remained and now reclaims the Speed Force whenever a Speedster dies, like a superhero version of the Law of Conservation. We will most likely see Black Racer posses Wally West in The Flash season 3.

I’m still expecting to see Barry Allen’s twin brother Cobalt Blue, Malcome Thawne, separated at birth and raised by the vindictive, future enemy of The Flash, Eobard Thawne, but we may have to wait for a season 3 finale plot twist for that. I keep tweeting The Flash writers and producers with this story arc, so it may still happen. The Flash writers are uber secretive, but they have inadvertently revealed that they have mapped out story arcs for future seasons. Looking forward to more Team Flash.

‘Jessica Jones’ Netflix / Marvel’s next great thing. Just watch it.

Jessica_Jones copy.pngJessica Jones, Marvel superhero, based in Hell’s KItchen, New York. I’ve waited to write this because I wanted everyone to watch it first. Don’t worry, this post contains no major spoilers. All this weekend, everyone has asked me, what I loved about Jessica Jones, was it as good or better than Netflix Marvel Daredevil? or even, should I watch it? Um, yes, WATCH IT! It is amazing. It is different than Daredevil, not another chapter of the Marvel Universe; it is unique and tells a very different story, even the lighting and camera angles are different to distinguish Jessica Jones as its own story. What I love most about Jessica Jones is the characters. Every character on Jessica Jones, all 13 episodes, is simply amazing, the character development was so thorough, I feel like I know these people. Jessica Jones brought real characters to the Netflix small screen. All of them had their flaws, their weaknesses and their strengths. Some, like Jessica Jones, had the ability to rise above and keep going, even when there was very little hope.

_1442511657[may contain spoilers here]: The villain, Kilgrave, was also flawed. In the beginning of the ‘Jessica Jones’ series, Kilgrave was this unstoppable force, who could do anything and was untouchable. But as the series progresses, more is revealed about Kilgrave, his personal nature and things/events [not going to say exactly which, just watch the ‘Jessica Jones’ series] that make you sympathize for him. You really get to understand Kilgrave and his motivations, and late in the series, you get to watch his obsession overcome him and watch him begin to unravel.

Jessica_and_Luke.png

I have never watched such great writing with characters and story in any superhero movie or tv series as I have with ‘Jessica Jones.’ It is my hope that this is the future of story telling, no more episodic, weekly 45min shorts, or even an hour and a half 3 act retelling of a comic series. There is such a rich history of superheroes in comic books, going back 14 years, (for Jessica Jones), even 75 years for some superheroes. Watching a few episodes on regular television or even a movie just isn’t enough to understand the characters. Marvel has once again mastered superhero story telling on the Netflix platform.

Screen Shot 2015-08-23 at 11.31.42 AM

The future of the Marvel Cinematic Universe on Netflix will include a ‘Luke Cage’ series, ‘Iron Fist’ (yes, ‘Iron Fist’ is back and will be an original Netflix series), along with season 2 of ‘Daredevil,’ (featuring Punisher and Elektra) coming February 2016, and quite possibly a ‘Defenders’ series, with Jessica Jones, Luke Cage, Daredevil and Iron Fist. We will definitely see a team up of these four characters on one or more the ongoing Netflix series, but we may also see an additional series of the ‘Defenders.’ Also, Marvel has ordered a ‘Moon Knight’ series from Netflix, premiering 2017.

‘Jessica Jones,’ just watch it.

Moon Knight may be coming to Netflix Marvel original series! Will Moon Knight be replacing Iron Fist on The Defenders?

Moon_knight_inline_3

Moon Knight may get an original Marvel series on Netflix! (rumor not confirmed, but 82% accurate). this immediately begs the question, is this why Iron Fist will (most likely) not be getting an original Marvel Netflix series? will Moon Knight be part of The Defenders instead of Iron Fist? Moon Knight is based in New York, so this switch, could, in theory, take place. Moon Knight has teamed up with other New York based Marvel superheroes and teams before, including the Avengers.

Moon_Knight_origin_4

Moon Knight, Marc Spector, was a mercenary in north Africa, who stood up to his ruthless commander, Bushman, in order to save an archeologist’s daughter. Marc Spector, nearly killed by Bushman, wandered the desert and found himself in the Tomb of Pharaoh Seti, where he died under the statue of an Egyptian moon god, called Khonshu: The Taker of Vengeance. Marc Spector’s heart began to beat again, but now with the knowledge of Khonshu and thus began his path of vengeance as Moon Knight. Moon Knight moved to New York, with his Mercenary friend and helicopter pilot, Frenchy and the archeologist’s daughter, Marlene. Moon Knight then becomes a millionaire (because it’s this easy in comics), assumes several different aliases and continues a path of vengeance on anyone whom the police can’t handle, with Frenchy’s new moon-shaped stealth helicopter.

moon_knight_by_aspersio-d4bb78b

Moon Knight was hinted at in Captain America: The Winter Soldier, but top sources did say that was just a tease, there was no plan for Moon Knight, at that point, to enter the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Moon Knight will be getting a new comic book series releasing winter 2016, where Marc Spector wakes up to find himself in an asylum, wondering if all the aliases and Egyptian moon god Khonshu were all just made up, in his head. (more on this and Moon Knight here) the new. upcoming Moon Knight comic book series may tie in to the rumored upcoming Netflix series. I hope it does, Moon Knight is just awesome, and also dark, a perfect fit for Netflix.

watch the Jessica Jones teaser trailer here:

the Marvel Netflix Jessica Jones trailer tells us only a few things: that the series is for sure-for sure called, ‘Jessica Jones’ and not ‘A.K.A. Jessica Jones;’ that Jessica Jones is indeed a private eye with Alias Detective Agency and something will happen where she needs to use her powers again, and finally, the Netflix series will indeed be released in november: nov 20 2015. it’s a beautiful trailer, using Jessica Jones colors. lawyers in Hell’s Kitchen often need a good detective..Daredevil may appear in this series and will eventually team up Jessica to form The Defenders, with Iron Fist and Luke Cage, who both will have their own original Marvel series on Netflix, coming next year. Krysten Ritter will star as Jessica Jones, Rachael Taylor as Patsy Walker (future sidekick), Mike Colter as Luke Cage (boyfriend/husband), and David Tenant (Dr WHo) as villain, The Purple Man, who can control anyone with his mere pheromones. Jessica Jones is a great character and ‘Jessica Jones’ will be very interesting to watch, yet another dark series, perfect for Netflix, can’t wait ’til november!
