oooo, ya, • SPOILER ALERT • sorry, well not really, you should have already seen it opening weekend. the only acceptable excuse for not seeing Captain America: the Winter Soldier opening weekend, or any Marvel movie, would be…perhaps underground ferret hunting in Bosnia while being chased by giant robots. but as that is highly unlikely for most of us, your excuse is invalid. IT’S CAPTAIN AMERICA! ok, i’m calm now..
the action in this movie is unprecedented. the Nick Fury street scene was probably the most amazing action sequence i have ever seen. it definitely harkens back to “the bank scene,” from Heat. this is the scene that stands out the most. there are many action sequences in this film, all of them amazing.
HYDRA. THANOS. INFINITY STONES and new “mutants.”
if you don’t know what Hydra is, watch the first Captain America movie again, they explain it’s origins; it’s creation during World War II by Agent Smith, i mean, Red Skull, under the Nazi Regime. Also, i should mention, in the first Captain America film, (Captain America: the First Avenger), Red Skull found the Tesseract in Norway, one of the Infinity Stones, this one from Asgard, yeah, that’s where Thor is from. confused? well you just have to pat attention, because if you don’t, you will be really lost on august 1st. what? you don’t know why august 1st is the most pivotal day in superhero cinematic history? GUARDIANS of the GALAXY of course! yes, add that to your iCal & google drive/docs/whatever right now. why? THANOS is why. THANOS. OMG, really? Thanos was born on titan, he genetically enhanced himself to make him uber powerful. he fell in love with Lady Death & killed most of his race to impress her. then he found the cosmic cube, making him virtually omnipotent (as a side note: in doing so, killing Drax the Destroyer’s parents, and yes, Drax is one of the Guardians of the Galaxy). Thanos’ quest for ultimate power and his will to kill all living things to impress Lady Death, yes it really does matter who you chose to date, features the creation of the Infinity Gauntlet, that’s a plate-mail glove, like knights used to wear, do i have to explain everything? anyway, the Infinity Gauntlet is gold and when fitted with all of the Infinity Stones grants the wearer power great enough to destroy the universe. the Tesseract is one Infinity Stone and in Thor 2: the Dark World (you know, with the dark elves), we see the another Infinity Stone, the Aether. at the end of the movie, during the final credits scene, we meet The Collector, as Lady Sif and Thor deliver the Aether to him for safe keeping. The Collector is immortal and omnipotent, but became complacent and rather bored with his long existence, so he began to collect things, rare things, and once he had one of an item, he just had to have all of whatever it was to complete the collection, hence the name, ‘the collector.’ now, the Aether was actually not the second Infinity Stone that we have seen in the Marvel movie universe. in the Avengers, we had several sneak peaks to what was to come. we see Thanos, briefly and shrouded. he was the one that Loki kneeled to; the one that rescued Loki from the the frost giant world of Jotunheim (pronounced “yo-den-hi mm”), gave him command of the Chitauri army and, most importantly, a staff of power with, yes, you guessed it, wait-what? you didn’t guess? grrrrr-another Infinity Stone. so that’s three Infinity Stones three more to go. so yes, we will see Thanos in full action for the Guardians of the Galaxy movie, yes AUGUST 1ST!, and we will see more Infinity Stones and more of the Collector. but we wont get to see the Infinity Gauntlet in full form until the Avengers3, yes we have to wait a while, a long while, probably until 2018 😦
ok, bad to our story, Captain America: the Winter Soldier. for the credits preview scene (there were two, one mid-credits, and one at the very end, after you discover they filmed a lot of the movie in Ohio of places, and yes, we yelled out “OHIO,” with fist in the air, just like from the Drew Carey show, when we first saw that.) the mid-credit scene showed a secret Hydra base, future Hydra villain Baron von Stucker (former nazi, who has slowed his aging process) and human experimentation using, yes, Loki’s staff and the second Infinity Stone. as you probably guessed by now, Thanos really wants that stone back and is really going to make Loki suffer for failing him and losing the staff. it wont matter that Loki is cloaked, appearing as Odin, in Asgard, Thanos will find him (he actually threatened Loki, saying just that, in the Avengers). now that the Red Skull is gone, in the Marvel cinematic universe, other Captain America villains will arise like Stucker or Vemo or … actually, there are quite a few. i know, i know, i’m getting to it, who were those last surviving people in the cells? or the”twins,” as they were referred to in the mid-credit scene? well, i need to explain what has happened irl, (in real life), with Marvel and Marvel Movies. Marvel almost went under for a second time in the late 90’s. several things happened to save them. Disney ended buying Marvel and the Marvel Universe, Sony bought the exclusive movie rights to Spider-man and, more importantly, to this story, Fox bought the rights to not only, the X-men, but also mutants, and every type of mutant and even the use of the word “mutant.” sooo, that means that no mutants or X-men can ever appear in Marvel movies, (also no Spidey). this is detrimental to how superheroes work. imagine a world where a story is told where there were only police and no firemen or EMT’s, they need each other to face each threat and disaster and save lives. so so sooo, back to the mid-credit scene, Marvel, it seems, has developed a way to create mutants, without actually being mutants, genetic disposition that manifests during puberty or is otherwise activated. so so so soooo….drum roll…the two “twins,” were QUICKSILVER, who is kinda like the Flash, and SCARLET WITCH, one of the most awesome female mutants/avengers/super heroines of all time. she has really awesome powers, is such a fascinating character and has a dark quality as well, that makes her really interesting. in the comics, QUICKSILVER and SCARLET WITCH are the children of Magneto, thus genetically inheriting mutant powers. i’ll do a separate post on the coolness of Wanda Maximoff, aka the SCARLET WITCH, so you can fully understand her. ok, i’ll do one on QUICKSILVER as well, mostly because he will be featured in the upcoming Fox X-men movie, with a different actor than the one playing Quicksilver in the future Marvel movies. how is that legally possible? Quicksilver is a mutant, therefore is now owned by Fox, but both Quicksilver and the Scarlet Witch were both Avengers in the comic series, so they kinda fall into two legal categories, “mutant” and “avenger.” and thanks loads stoopid lawyers for making this so confusing. can’t we all just get along & make superhero as they should be made?
HYDRA and the Fall of S.H.I.E.L.D.
what will happen to Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.? (& damn it Stan Lee for making S.H.I.E.L.D. so hard to type, every time, SHIFT period, SHIFT period, SHIFT period, ugh~~). will they be canceling the prime time tv show on abc now? what? i didn’t cover what happened to S.H.I.E.L.D. (ugh ~~) in Captain America:the Winter Soldier yet? ooops. ok, here’s what happened. in the Avengers, there was a scene where you saw the HYDRA symbol on crates in the weapons cache (the HYDRA symbol is that of an actual hydra, with tentacles, but with a skull, like the one from ancient Greece, where, as part of the 12 tasks of Hercules, Hercules attempted to slay the beast by chopping off its many heads; as he did so, two heads grew back in its place.). so, if you were paying attention, you knew HYDRA was coming, maybe not in the form of essentially destroying S.H.I.E.L.D. so what happens now? (and yes, i started two sentences in a row with “so,” so?) so what happens to Agent Coulson and tv’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.? (and yes i did it again, but it really work there did it?). last fall we saw Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. incorporate into the Thor 2: the dark world plot line. will they be doing this again? they can’t. why? they just brought Agent Coulson back from the dead, they can’t disband S.H.I.E.L.D. on tv and tear away a character we have grown to love. so (yep..) don’t believe the hype, the series will continue, just with deception, duplicity and hopefully more Marvel movie action. for everyone who has complained that Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. is boring, well get ready, because leading up to and including, the final episode, is said to be “riveting.”
oh ok, i’ll tell you what happened in the Winter Soldier.. (i did mention spoiler alert already, right?) S.H.I.E.L.D. was infiltrated by HYDRA, from the highest ranking official (Pierce, not Nick Fury of course) down to the average agent. S.H.I.E.L.D.’s new helicarriers were designed to eliminate threats from high altitude, low-earth orbit, using a sophisticated satellite network. HYDRA’s plan was to take over this network and eliminate threats before they happen, by profiling potential human threats, 20 million of them, using Zola’s algorithm and killing them. Captain America demanded nick Fury end S.H.I.E.L.D. so that HYDRA will never again take over and have that much power. the flaw in this plan is that HYDRA could just as easily infiltrate other organizations, like the CIA or the FBI, and may have done so already. Hydra will still continue, but now S.H.I.E.L.D. is not there to stop them. but it was a nice twist to see in the film. they set it up for Nick Fury to be a regular, hands-on agent again; i’m really looking forward to seeing that. i wonder if A.I.M. will ever be incorporated into the movies or tv Marvel world (maybe with Project Centepede)? (A.I.M. is a group of villainous scientists similar to HYDRA). also to note: it was hinted in the film that Natasha Romanov BLACK WIDOW’s ‘checkered past’ may come to light. i think they mean how she worked for HYDRA in the past. to me, this is setting the stage for a stand alone BLACK WIDOW movie, which i would be very excited about seeing, not just for Scarlet Johansson, but also for Widow’s relationship with HAWKEYE. i’m still not clear how this segways into S.W.O.R.D. and Abigale Brand (hopefully future movies will cover ‘Secret Invasion’ & Spiderwoman/Jessica Drew; really, REALLY hope so). there is just so much material Marvel can draw from to create movies, and by the way, they have made movie plans through 2028, so pay attention in each film, they will hint at future films.
so go see Captain America : the Winter Soldier, if you haven’t already; see it in XD sound, as well as in 3D, so you can hear the vibranium reverb effect from Captain America’s shield. did you want to know the future of Captain America, Thanos & the Winter Soldier? stay tuned to my blog, youtube & twitter, and i just might tell you, hint: Captain America 3 will be epic, but nothing can prepare you for the events that will transpire in Avengers 3.
the only thing that would have made this movie better, when Captain America was falling from an impossible height, from a crashing helicarrier (but this time onto pavement, not water), Ironman appears out of nowhere, catching him before he hits the ground. that’s the kind of cross over Marvel often plays, and it would have been uber amazing to see it on film. although, a scene like that may have caused geeks everywhere to spontaneously explode, so maybe they didn’t add a scene like that to preserve the geek population. well played Marvel, well played.
